Velma Vickridge (fondly known as Vel) passed away peacefully on the 10th June 2018.

Vel dedicated much of her life to lacrosse. There was a strong family involvement with both her first husband playing, and then their two daughters Kaye and Derryce.

All three often played in the same team alongside Rae Reid and her daughters Karen and Fran. Vel started out as a field player and in latter years as a goalie for Fremantle Lacrosse Club until her retirement in her late 50’s.

Vel was active at State level and managed various teams including her first one in 1970 in Adelaide when she was a playing Manager. Two years later Vel managed the WA team in a Home State Championship, and in 1974 in Melbourne. The last team Vel managed was the 1987 WA team which competed in Hobart.

Vel was bestowed with Honorary Life Membership to both Fremantle Lacrosse Club and the Western Australian Women’s Lacrosse Association.

She will be fondly remembered for her dedication to the sport and years of active service.

The funeral cortege will arrive at 1.30pm at Fremantle Cemetery, Carrington Street, Palmyra on Monday 18 June.
